Podcast: SDRNRfm #2 - The Clash

Photobucket
SDRNRfm is back on your wireless. Last time I put together a mixtape it was a Bo Diddley beat kinda deal This time it's The Clash - songs by either The Clash themselves, acts that have sampled them or songs you can hear a direct influence. Don't expect balls-out guitar though, This is The Clash doing dub, gospel, and funk. It's annoyingly short as Garageband doesn't like songs over 34mins, Obviously Phish don't use this program. So I think this is just part 1 of a 2 part special courtesy of Zshare records. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

SDRNRfm - The Clash
1. Intro to Lightning Strikes (not once but twice) - The Clash (Sandanista)
2. Straight to Hell – The Clash (Combat Rock)
3. Paperplanes - MIA (KALA)
4. History Song - The Good, The Bad, The Queen (Self-titled)
5. Dub Be Good To Me - Beats International
6. Guns of Brixton - The Clash (London Calling)
7. Dirty Harry – The Clash (Golden Bullets)
8. Welcome to the Third World - Dandy Warhols (Earth to Dandy Warhols)

Podcast: SDRNRfm #1

I dabbled in radio a while back, even won an award thank you very much CBAA (Community Broadcasters Association of Australia). I wish I had a cool voice to warrant an intro or back-announce like I was Joe Strummer on Radio Free Europe, or Henry Rollins on KRCW or Wolfman Jack.
Instead, it's a twenty minute sampler of some tunes, some old, some even older, that I've been enjoying and wanted to hear all together. The tracks aren't exactly mixed (though I did try my hand - you be the judge) so it's not a mixtape in what the kids consider them these days. The track choices just works off a simple similar beat that works its way into a Bo-Diddley rhythm.
I will probably try another based on a band theme next for some cohesion. Until then, I hope you hear something new (or old).

Safe European Home

I considered calling this blog Safe European Home, after a song by one of the best bands of all time, The Clash. As the world implodes on itself, be it through credit crunches, war or reality television I’m sitting here in my Safe European Home in quaint, ol' Amsterdam.

On second thoughts, as the title for a whole blog it was kinda shit and obscure. Nonetheless I found this ragtag tapped-together piece of footage from The Clash documentary Westway to the World. It’s been re-cut from the original way film maker Don Letts edited it, but I do like the content.

The song is about Joe and Mick’s trip to Jamaica to explore the sounds of reggae and how on arrival the Brits didn’t feel welcome in Kingston. Thus on return they were happy to be in their Safe European Home.

The song itself is not the best Clash song ever -– that would be “Train in Vain (Stand By Me)” – but it still fucking well rocks.

The clip also shows their growing interest in hiphop culture and Topper’s drug use which would end up the drummer’s Clash career.

Pop quiz: What British group sampled the kid’s rap on their 2004 album?

You can watch Westway to the World in its entirety on youtube.
